Nothing Special

2022 INDIES Finalist
Finalist, Picture Books (Children's)

Jax lives in Detroit. He expects his week-long visit to his grandparents in coastal Virginia to take the shape of his city summers—going to the movies, visiting the zoo, and shopping for new toys. But Jax’s grandpa has other ideas. Though he’s apprehensive at first, Jax learns to appreciate simplicity, and he forms a stronger bond with his grandparents through shared traditions. Found objects are used to construct intricate scenes and figures in the illustrations, which invite lingering and encourage return visits.
