G.I. Bones

A Sergeants Sueno & Bascom Mystery

George Sueño, agent for the Criminal Investigation Division of the 8th U.S. Army in Seoul, makes a visit, out of curiosity, to a fortune teller named Auntie Mee. She begs Sueño to find the missing bones of a soldier who was murdered twenty years earlier. This soldier’s spirit is haunting her, pleading with her to find his remains so that he can finally find peace and justice. Sueño, who does not believe in any of this stuff, is momentarily bewildered, but in hopes of impressing a female doctor friend and bringing about justice for a fellow soldier he begins an investigation. Little does he realize he has stepped into a web of greed, deceit, and desire for power and control.

With help from his testosterone-steeped partner, Ernie Bascom, he manages to locate the missing soldier’s bones. He returns later to the spot, only to find the bones missing again with a new, very fresh corpse sitting in their place. This begins a chain of events which include several more murders, a suicide attempt, an abduction, and riots.

Meanwhile, the second-highest ranking officer in the 8th Division, Colonel Oswald Q. Tiwell, has a spoiled daughter who stages a teenage rebellion. Sueño is made responsible for keeping tabs on her erratic behavior—behavior which might, in the end, cost him his job.

Throughout the twists and turns of this story, Limon paints incredible word pictures of the sights, sounds, and smells of Seoul and the culture that inhabits it. He focuses in particular on the hold that prostitution has in Korea.

This mystery is not dependent on familiarity with the entire Sueño & Bascom series to be enjoyable. GI Bones is a gripping story that will keep you entertained and guessing until the very end.
