The Right Blessing
An Identity Story
Joey always felt different. By nine years old, she was ready to tell her family the truth: “I am not a boy.” Though nervous about being rejected or misunderstood, she summoned her courage to reveal herself on Shabbat. Instead, she ended up telling her father only that she didn’t want the boys’ blessing. After much consternation and a day’s pause, she managed the full truth: she needed the girls’ blessing instead. This affirming story about owning your identity—and, in Joey’s cheering case, being accepted as such by your family—is complemented by colorful illustrations embellished with Joey’s lovely crayon-art touches.
