Uncharted Moments

Love, Legacy, and the Lewis & Clark Trail

Clarion Rating: 3 out of 5

History intertwines well with personal reflections in Uncharted Moments, an engaging travel memoir about a couple following the Lewis and Clark trail.

Jeffrey S. Ton’s wisdom-filled travel memoir Uncharted Moments intertwines his love story with the bicentennial celebration of Lewis and Clark’s expedition.

Tracing Lewis and Clark’s route from Monticello, Virginia, to Astoria, Oregon, the book’s historical documentation is precise. It runs alongside descriptions of Ton and his partner’s trips along the route between 2003 and 2006 and again in 2007 and 2009. Immersing themselves in the explorers’ experiences and wondering about what they thought as they stood in the same locations, overlooking expansive hills and rivers, Ton expresses reverence for nature throughout.

Ton’s love story is also covered with clarity, beginning when he met his partner at work and they became friends. Along the way on their trips, they make personal discoveries and are given meaningful reminders of why they’re together. Their interactions with others at various stops pair with tender, if familiar, observations about each other’s glowing eyes and smiles. To add some nuance to the book’s discussions of history, empathy is also expressed regarding what Native Americans went through in the past. A passage about a whipping tree and a preacher’s apology at an event stand out.

Diaristic in form, the chapters are brightened by cartwheeling poetic phrases, many of which are drawn from nature. From references to the flowing and uniting Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to the power of stillness in shared silence, the prose leaves an enduring impression.

History intertwines well with personal reflections throughout. Black-and-white photographs record the couple’s trip, though focusing most on their personal connections and joy together, even on rainy days. But the book leans into such accouterments heavily, with visual flourishes like a flowing script font used to introduce the opening phrases of each chapter. “Legs” of the trip are also highlighted, with brief accompanying quotes and correlating thoughts.

Although some stops along the route were unplanned, Ton’s years of preparation before the trips took place call into question the applicability of the title—a possible allusion to his wife’s later illness, which paused their travels. Further, the book’s shift from travelogue to personal tribulations is stark, trading adventure tales for heart-wrenching discussions of unexpected personal challenges. Also distracting are the book’s subsequent suggestions of extracting leadership lessons from the tale, which focuses more on personal strength and wisdom than leadership.

Nevertheless, Uncharted Moments is a celebratory travel memoir covering a couple’s reflective excursions during the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial.
