The Very Fine Clock
“Heart speaks to heart” in this picture book, a work of melancholy, humor, and unmatchable charm from two celebrated artists. Its whimsical tale concerns a respected professor, John, and his most reliable friend, Ticky, a Swiss clock with noble connections. Ticky is so respected among the professor’s peers that they offer to make him an honorary professor, too, but Ticky worries about how the promotion might impact his friendships with the other timekeeps in the house (one in particular). Edward Gorey’s detailed, winsome line drawings ably capture the high society trappings of Ticky and the professor’s estate.
