Southern Bred

Please don’t try this at home—penning fifty gothic memories in individual poems as a memoir—unless you’re comfortable being known as Father Goose, live in a tree house, write for the likes of The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, and Harper’s, and regularly receive invitations to recite your poetry at the Library of Commerce, American Library in Paris, and elementary schools around the world. The poet-in-residence at the Alabama School of Fine Arts, Charles Ghigna also finds time to write a syndicated column and teach at Samford University.

DAY DREAM

Childhood,
and again
I am outside

on a hilltop
staring up
at the clouds

searching past the cumulus
to the long-tail dragons
and silver sailing ships

that have come to take me away
to this rare dream
of dreaming.
