Starred Review:

Ren's Pencil

In this imagination-awakening, sympathetic picture book about homesickness and becoming your own heroine, Ren is crushed when she learns that her family is going to emigrate, leaving her grandmother, whose story times are a highlight of Ren’s days, behind. Her grandmother assures her that she’ll find stories abroad, though; she presses a pencil into Ren’s hands as a promise. Indeed, Ren discovers her inner storyteller in her new home, unleashing wondrous creatures and leading grand adventures aplenty. With their flashes of neon color and focus on the magic of the mind, the illustrations are a continual, surrealistic daydream delight.
