Olive

This emotional story starts with a loss: Lilah returns home from school and learns that her cat, Olive, has passed away. Her grief is deep. She pushes others away, and she avoids the activities and places that Olive once enlivened. A tree is planted in Olive’s memory: she wants nothing to do with it. And then a mewling new cat arrives, testing the limits of Lilah’s anger and sadness. Watercolor illustrations capture the world moving around Lilah, as well as her shifting emotions.
