How to Have a Thought
A Walk with Charles Darwin
An eccentric picture book befitting its subject, this primer on Charles Darwin offers offbeat advice on problem-solving. When Darwin faced a puzzle, it says, he would walk loops in the woods with only a walking stick and his terrier, Polly, for company; he would stack rocks at the beginning and knock one over each time he passed. Through illustrations that blend styles and media, the story suggests there’s no puzzle a sturdy stick, a stack of rocks, and a brisk walk can’t solve.
