Butterfly Sea

Sisters whose goals are somewhat at odds with one another’s go on a seaside adventure in this lovely picture book that intertwines themes of working together with appreciation for nature. The eldest hopes to capture images of butterflies with her grandmother’s camera; the youngest just wants to role play, as a pirate first and then as a shark. They find equilibrium by the shore and in the garden, learning that patience is required when you’re seeking magic. The language is poetic, and the soft, soothing pen-and-watercolor illustrations honor both the spirit of the sisters’ play and the beauty of the beach-adjacent setting.
