A Single Dreadlock
A celebration of diversity, individuality, and self-acceptance, this warm picture book follows a boy’s move from Jamaica to Newfoundland, where his glorious dreads most definitely stand out. Flourishing Jamaican landscapes are illuminated by the glow of Lovie’s grandmother’s love as she tends to his curls; trading seaside for seaside, he feels somewhat at home “bobbing all around the bay” in Canada. When school starts, though, others make him self-conscious—until his grandmother visits and reminds him how beautiful he is. Hanukkah tie-ins and musical Jamaican Patois lines further expand this lovely, affirming title’s wide reach.
