My Spirituality of Nature

The Relatedness of Spirituality & Nature in Your Life

Clarion Rating: 2 out of 5

Leading by example, the passionate memoir My Spirituality of Nature argues that intimate relationships with the natural world help foster inner peace.

Morreece Elaine Cook’s heartfelt memoir My Spirituality of Nature concerns a profound spiritual connection to the natural world.

Cook had a lonely childhood. She often felt disconnected from her purpose and distanced from those around her, resulting in low self-esteem and depression. Later, she experienced spiritual awakening through the Catholic Church. She also spent time in a convent and pursued a career as a clinical social worker. By connecting with her spiritual self and developing a relationship with God, she became more engaged with the world around her, more energized, and more content with life in general. Indeed, she writes that she achieved a kind of spiritual understanding that allowed her to dedicate her time to caring for others, as well as to face her personal health issues and near-death experiences with confidence.

There’s a testimonial element to this work, which seeks to lead by example. It argues that intimate relationships with the natural world can lead others to inner peace, a sense of purpose, and feelings of divine unity too. It insists that all of creation is an expression of God’s handiwork and posits that human beings can access divine connections through their cores, or their spirits, souls, or essences, via which linear time can be transcended. Indeed, the book suggests that accessing past, present, and future realities, including higher dimensions and other worlds, is possible via strong core connections.

Various practices for deepening the connection to one’s core are described in the course of the work. These include making art, hiking, listening to music, and observing nature. However, the book is neither structured nor clear enough to be persuasive on these points to outside audiences. It is burdened by instances of repetition, too, in particular when it comes to ideas about connecting with one’s core and nature-based spirituality; few new insights are included when these subjects reemerge.

The book is prone to jumping between personal anecdotes, spiritual teachings, and philosophical reflections at random. Its transitions are jarring, and it lacks ultimate cohesion. Grammatical errors, including those with punctuation and capitalization, undermine its delivery, as do run-on sentences and obscure meanings.

A passionate testimonial memoir, My Spirituality of Nature treats the natural world as a divine conduit for understanding oneself and the universe.
