In 1941 Leningrad, self-centered Katya has broken the most important rule in Soviet society--never say anything that can be used against you. Things go from bad to worse when Germany attacks. Katya volunteers to help slow the Nazi advance but the German war machine slaughters thousands of her fellow volunteers. Katya escapes with a young woman and they are on the run, in the wild, searching for safety. Ultimately, Katya learns to fight the enemy and her own demons in this redemption story.
