The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) in Salem, Massachusetts, the oldest continuously operating US museum, has collected glass since 1799. Carl and Betty Pforzheimer's landmark gift of 220 studio glass works establishes PEM as a major contemporary glass destination. Two essays contextualize this gift within PEM's 225 years of glass collecting and the history of international and American glass movements.
