Foreword Reviews Announces pdf-FIRST Submission Policy for INDIES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Traverse City, MIForeword Reviews is implementing a new PDF-First submission model for the Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards, reflecting an industry shift toward sustainability, transparency, and operational efficiency.

Beginning immediately, all INDIES submissions must include a complete digital PDF at the time of entry. The PDF serves as the primary intake and tracking record for the awards process. Physical books remain optional and supplemental.

The new model significantly reduces unnecessary shipping materials, paper handling, and transportation emissions associated with traditional book submissions. It also provides publishers with enhanced visibility and more reliable tracking throughout the awards cycle.

“PDF-First brings transparency and accountability to every stage of the submission process,” said Awards Director Christopher Nesbit. “It’s a practical improvement with meaningful sustainability gains.”

How It Works

  • A complete, final PDF is required for all INDIES submissions.

  • The PDF becomes the official submission record for intake and tracking.

  • Physical books may be sent as supplemental materials and remain welcome for categories where a physical format is essential (such as Art, Photography, and Coffee Table books).

Reviews Program

Foreword Reviews is also encouraging publishers submitting titles for review consideration to provide PDFs whenever possible. While print copies are still accepted for reviews, a digital submission allows the editorial team to evaluate titles more quickly and efficiently.

Looking Ahead

The INDIES program will serve as the first implementation of the PDF-First model. Foreword Reviews will continue evaluating how digital-first workflows might improve other programs in the future.
