Decade of Wonder

This Thanksgiving, I celebrate ten years on Foreword‘s editorial team—years I’ve spent gobsmacked, on repeat, by the wonder-inducing titles released every day by independent publishers. Each selection period, I end up aglow; each upload date ignites excitement about what readers wait to discover. Through political shifts and personal changes, this is the constant: there is always a great new title to anticipate, always a forthcoming volume to expand our perceptions and equip us for the challenges ahead.

This is a light retrospective, I know. I’m cognizant of the concerns that harry us just beyond our library and bookstore doors, and yet I want to start the new year out with hope and the conviction that we’ve got this, with the promise that we’ll be right there with you through it all.

… And maybe with a book recommendation, plus sixty-five more, if you’ll indulge me: Always Carry Salt was the book that bowled me over this round. A memoir that I didn’t know I needed that soothed an ache I didn’t know I felt, it is one glowing example of why we do this work. Its account of endeavoring to preserve author Samantha Ellis’s faltering milk language, Judeo-Iraqi Arabic, stunned me with its vulnerability and determination. (It also proffered a few tantalizing recipes to try.) I suspect you’ll love it, alongside all of the other amazing books covered herein. Read on, friends—and look forward to the next round!

Sincerely,
