Gated Grief

The Daughter of a GI Concentration Camp Liberator Discovers a Legacy of Trauma

After his death, photographs that her WWII veteran father took in the European Theatre revealed to the author that he had been a liberator of a Nazi concentration camp. In a cross country journey to meet other liberators, she witnesses within each one raw and denied trauma. And so she begins to understand her family history of devastation and silence. She sees that her own trauma flowed from her father's, and in forgiving him, she opens the door to healing.
