Planet Backpacker: Across Europe on a Mountain Bike & Backpacking on Through Egypt, India & Southeast Asia-Around the World (The Wandering Press, 978-0-9821344-0-5) details the four-continent, twenty-country, five-month-long jaunt undertaken by Robert Downes, a northern Michigan newsweekly co-owner and editor. A thinking man prone to wry observations on hostels, bar stools, and the out-of-the-way haunts of seasoned travelers, Downes sought to relive some of the free-spirited travels of his wanderlust youth. He captured his journey in daily blog installments leading to this very fine book, ideal fodder for mid-life, armchair crisis avoidance.
